Dear Wolmer's Family,

Our tennis team has delivered yet again. Our boys dominated the Best of the Best National High School team tennis competition held over the weekend by winning all of their matches against the best schools Islandwide. They beat St. George's 5-0, SOS (from MoBay) 5-0,Campion College 4-1 & Hillel 4-1. This was truly a excellent performance.

The team captain, Kyle Martin will present the championship trophy to Dr. Small at the next General Assembly.

Thanks for your support.

Wolmer's Champs Fundraising Campaign 2017 - "Maroons Going For Gold"

To All Wolmerians and Friends of Wolmer’s,

It is with great pleasure that we announce the official launch of the Wolmer’s Champs Fundraising Drive 2017 for Champs 2017 to be held at the National Stadium from March 28, 2017 to April 1, 2017. The 2016/17 athletic season has seen a lot of changes relative to the administration of the boys’ track and field team with the hiring of a new head coach, Mr. Danny Hawthorne former coach of World 100m champion and double Olympic silver medalist and sprint relay gold medalist Yohan Blake.

At the helm for the girls’ team is Mr. Michael Carr, back for his 31st season with the maroon and gold lady warriors. Most will remember Mr. Carr for developing some of Jamaica’s most prodigious sprint talents: Nichole Mitchell in the early 1990s and the most decorated female sprinter of our modern era, multiple Olympic and World Championship gold medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

Our young athletes need a further combined approx. JA$2.45 million (US$19,105) for Champs

This year the remaining shortfall for the combined Girls’ and Boys’ Schools’ 2017 Champs budget is $2,445,473.12 ($1,749,223.12 Boys’ + $696,250 Girls’), having already raised $3,395,776.88 from sponsorships and other fundraising efforts.

Our Athletes Feel Abandoned

Our athletes have voiced that they feel abandoned and criticized by our past student fraternity. Let us prove them wrong and really turn up to support them financially, at the various meets, at training sessions and at Champs as we slowly regain our former athletic glory and pride. The seeds we plant today will bear fruit in the years to come.

The Clarion Call

Please join me and the rest of the fundraising committee as we raise the much needed funds to ensure the continued development of our athletes, school and nation. We are, who we are today because of the support we received from those who went before us, when we were in school.

Closing Challenge

I and the rest of the committee pledge to make a donation of $70,000 JMD. I encourage all of you to donate individually or collectively within your various groups. If we can organize 35 groups to match our donation, we will surpass our target.

Fundraising For Wolmerian Medical Student Malcolm Binns

Fundraising campaign for Wolmerian medical student Malcolm Binns has been a success

Greetings Wolmerians and friends of Wolmer’s,

Thank you for your outpouring of support to help our needy Wolmerian medical student Malcolm Binns. The final accounting shows that we raised $487,900, exceeding our target of $331,000 by $156,900. You will recall that Malcolm was at risk of not being able to continue in second year medicine, because all of his first year tuition had not been paid. That hurdle has now been cleared, and the extra amount raised has been applied to his second year tuition.

The other good news is that our fundraising activities helped encourage the Canadian Foundation for UWI (CFUWI) to give an additional C$5,000, or approximately $473,000, towards Malcolm’s second year tuition, which as a result has now been fully paid.

There are many more young Wolmerians in need of our support, and we can make a difference to help them over the hurdles they may face. This campaign is an example of how, by working together, we can produce remarkable results.

To those who donated, thanks for your generosity to assist the younger generation.

Kirk Benjamin
